The best time to start was yesterday. The second best time is right now. Not Monday. Not next month. Now.
You’ve heard some version of this before. And you probably agreed with it. Nodded. Maybe even saved the post.
Then you went back to waiting.
The “Monday” Problem
Here’s what “I’ll start Monday” actually means:
Translation:
"I'll start Monday" = "I'm not willing to be uncomfortable today"
"Next month" = "I need 30 more days of excuses before I run out"
"When I'm ready" = "Never, but this sounds better"
Nobody is ever ready. The feeling of readiness is a myth your brain invented to protect you from discomfort. You will never wake up one morning and suddenly feel prepared to do the hard thing. That’s not how it works.
The people who build discipline don’t wait until they feel ready. They start before they’re ready and figure it out along the way.
Why Starting Is the Hardest Part
Your brain has a resistance system. It’s designed to keep you safe, which in practice means keeping you comfortable. Every time you try to start something new, your brain runs a risk assessment:
> Analyzing proposed change...
> Risk level: UNKNOWN
> Comfort impact: NEGATIVE
> Recommendation: ABORT. Try again Monday.
This is not a character flaw. It’s biology. Your brain is doing exactly what it evolved to do — minimize uncertainty and conserve energy.
The problem is that growth requires uncertainty and energy. So your brain’s default recommendation is always going to be “don’t change.”
You have to override the default.
The Override: Two Minutes
You don’t need to overhaul your life today. You need to start for two minutes.
- Want to start reading? Open the book. Read one page.
- Want to start exercising? Put on your shoes. Do 5 pushups.
- Want to start journaling? Write one sentence.
- Want to start waking up earlier? Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier. Not 2 hours. Fifteen minutes.
Two minutes. That’s the override command.
Your brain can’t generate enough resistance to block two minutes. It’s too small to trigger the alarm system. But once you’re in motion, something shifts. The resistance fades. Two minutes becomes ten. Ten becomes thirty.
The hardest part isn’t the workout. It’s putting on the shoes.
The Difference
The difference between where you are and where you want to be is not talent. It’s not luck. It’s not timing.
It’s the decision you keep postponing.
Every day you wait is another day of compounding in the wrong direction. The person who starts today — imperfectly, uncomfortably, with zero motivation — is a year ahead of the person who starts “when they’re ready.”
